This project cost me nothing because I had everything I needed on hand. So as the kids played with all their new Christmas toys, I sat down to do a little crafting. I had a random canvas that I had sitting around that had been used prior as a picture board in Caden's room. I didn't like the stark white, so I grabbed some of my paints and randomly started painting it. I truly had no idea the direction I was going with it and even posted this picture on my instagram with that exact caption! You could also cover the board with fabric and hot glue it to the back or use a staple gun if you have one.
Here are the 2 paint colors I used to get the final effect, which, to my surprise, ended up looking slightly chalboard-ish, slightly metal, slightly cork board-ish...
I just layered the paints randomly and ended up stopping when I liked how it looked. Not a good quality picture. Sorry! The paint was still wet+the flash on my phone+pendant lights above all make it look not so pretty, but I promise once it dried and in person it is a great finish!
I searched on Pinterest for some cute, free printables to use on the board and found some I just loved. There are so many talented people out there offering up their stuff for free!
Here are the links to the ones I used...
Owl Incentive Charts-Meghan Harris-Teachers Pay Teachers...When I taught first grade for several years before I had children, I LOVED a good chart to use for positive behavior for my students. I am using this chart mostly for Caden (4.5) and Baylor (3 in March). Hannah Cate doesn't really have a clue yet ;). They get stickers for cleaning their room, picking up toys, being good listeners, etc. Once their chart is filled, they get a special Mommy and Daddy date of their choice. So far, it is working well! Make an account with Teachers Pay Teachers and you will find some great resources for free and others for a minimal price.
2013 Monthly Calendar Printable in Chevron by The Organised Housewife...This is a great calendar because it has a little to-do list on the side. She has 4 different styles to choose from. I had to go for the chevron! You need to stop by her site when you get a chance. Great blog posts and a FANTASTIC shop filled with all kinds of things you can buy to help you become more organized! A must follow for any housewife!
Weekly Meal Planner by Whatever Dee-Dee wants, she's gonna get it...This has been the biggest struggle for me. Sitting down and actually planning what we will be eating for dinner every single night. Kyle and I agreed to only go out to eat once a week to save money (and our sanity with our 3 littles!) We were blowing through so much of our budget by just up and going out because I wasn't sure what I wanted to cook for dinner. This one printable is super cute and comes in 4 different color schemes...bonus!
Scripture Memory Cards from Beautifully Rooted by Molly from Mixed Molly...These are great little scripture cards with simple verses that our whole family is memorizing. I clip these on the little clip board and keep the others in a baggy. I LOVE the Beautifully Rooted site! They are currently not posting new content, but they have some very encouraging posts, as well as some pretty free printables of different scripture that you could print and put in a frame around your house.
Not on the board but I have printed a bunch of these and have them on hand to use because let's be honest, having something cute to write your grocery list on is way better than a regular ole' sheet of paper, right?...Grocery List by A Well-Feathered Nest...I love the categories for this grocery list printable because it mostly resembled how my grocery store is laid out and how I normally do it when making my list. She also has a great Plan Your Life pack you can purchase filled with all kinds of great things. Check it out!
I would suggest laying out what you are wanting to put on your board and play around with the arrangement to see which way will look the best. Other ideas of things you could put on the board-chore chart, quotes, inspirational pictures, mini dry erase board, little mail basket, hook for car keys, etc.
To make the label tags for the clipboards, I just used a simple white tag and stamped some mini letter stamps I bought at the good ole' Hob Lob and knotted a piece of twine through the hole. It is covering up the unsightly Staples logo that is on the silver part of the clipboard.
I also hot glued some twine onto my thumbtacks to bring in the twine from the clipboard and the little mini circle punch banner in the corner. I also just recently added each of the kids PDO calendars under the monthly calendar. This makes it easy for me to just flip the page up to see what they are to bring for show and tell each day or if they will be doing anything special at school. Having all 3 calendars in one place makes it way easier than just having them sitting on the kitchen counter, shuffled amongst mail and who knows what else!
The hot glue gun was used to attach the clipboards directly to the canvas.
On the other side of the door frame leading into our kitchen is where I put all the invitations for birthdays, parties, and special events. Again, having them hanging up where we see them coming in and out every day keeps them at the front of my mind so we don't miss out! It also keeps the clutter off my fridge! This is what I had on it at Christmas. Please note the variety of smiling/crying pictures as the years go by. This year was a group effort and Kyle and I had to jump in the picture because the younger 2 wouldn't have it any other way. Precious memories, right? :) Now it currently is filled with invites to several sweet little girls' birthday parties that the kids have been invited to. Didn't want to post a picture since the invites have personal addresses on them, but at least you get the idea!
And just a little FYI, on the opposite wall is where each of the kids have a hook that they hang jackets or backpacks and lunch boxes on. Picture coming later!
So there ya have it, ya'll. Cheers to a more organized home in 2013!

So far, this is what is working best for our family. I can always change up the printables if I need to or change out what I have clipped on each clipboard. I think this is super versatile and you could do a lot with the general concept.
